The engine as standard is an all aluminum, in-line six cylinder 3.7ltr with twin overhead camshafts. The modern trend has been to bore these engines out to 4.2ltr

The Valve Clearances should be as follows: Inlet 0.009/0.011" and Exhaust 0.011/0.013" - measured cold.
Valve Timing, measured with the correct valve clearances, as follows:
Inlet Camshaft: No 1 Inlet Valve should be open 0.064" at Top Dead Centre (TDC) with the valve on the opening side cycle.
Exhaust Camshaft: No 6 Exhaust Valve should be open 0.040" at TDC on closing side of the cycle.

The sump on early cars contained 14 pints of oil which was soon increased to 17 pints and from Chassis No. 571 the capacity increased to 21 pints.
