The front drum brakes are 12in x 2 i/4in Girling.

The shoes are operated by two 1in diameter wheel cylinders of simple construction, located diametrically opposite each other on the back plate.

12" Disc Brakes were fitted as standard to all MkIII's from AM300/3/1401, officially known at the time as MkIIIB's, though only the first car 1401 had 3B on the build sheet documentation.

The 100 cars from AM300/3/1300 were offered with disc brakes on the front after the prototype AM300/3A/1300 having had discs fitted to all four wheels. These were designated 3A's though only 14 ever opted for the discs before they became standard at AM300/3/1400.

The rear drum brakes in the early MkIII's are the same as were fitted to the later MkII's from 1201 onwards and have 12in x 1 3/4in drums, hydraulic non-servo, sliding shoe, with internal handbrake mechanism.

These shoes are hydraulically operated by a hydraulic wheel cylinder, which consists of a die cast aluminum housing, two pistons complete with dust covers's, seals, bakelite seal retainers and retaining spring.

The MkIII's retained the 1" hydraulic wheel cylinders up to AM300/3/1400, at which point they change to 3/4" cylinders. At AM300/3/1561 these again changed, this time to 7/8" cylinders.

The Brake Shoe & Lining Assembly remained 1 3/4" until AM300/3/1400, subsequent cars were fitted with 2 1/4" assemblies giving substantially more stopping power.
